Shiney, I always kind of wondered if those package managers had the abilty to install in a users homedir, for this very reason. Only slight problem I can see if the fact your homedir on the server is now about 350MB bigger :P - Ben

Thank you for this - I've generally done package installs when I have root access and was stumped when I had to install a package on a Gentoo box with just normal user privileges.

Not having to fight with make scripts is well worth the 350 MB hit from this!
